This site is intended to provide information on topics of interest to female-to-male (FTM, F2M) trans men, and their friends, family, colleagues and professionals. This means that transgender, cisgender, intersex, non-binary, genderqueer, questioning, are particularly welcome along with everyone else.
The site offers explanations of terms, including an explanation of the differences between transgender and transsexual. As language is changing all the time in relation to trans, there are some guidelines as to how to use some of the language, to include never using the term “tranny” in relation to anyone, although if you want to reclaim it for yourself, use it.
Here you can also find a broad outline of the transition process from female to male. This is a long process which demands a lot of patience as there are not just the wait for testosterone hormone therapy to have an impact, but even before any medical treatment can begin, some doctors require the trans individual to live their life in their chosen gender identity, as opposed to their assigned at birth identity, for two years before they can be signed up for medical intervention. This is because some of the treatment is irreversible, such as hormone therapy causing the voice to deepen.
Transgender individuals can present to medical providers at various stages of their transition, which may include medical and/or surgical treatment. For individuals transitioning from female to male (transgender men), medical treatment includes hormonal therapy with testosterone. Gender-affirming surgery includes "chest" surgery, such as mastectomy, and "genital" or "bottom" surgery, such as hysterectomy, oophorectomy, vaginectomy, metoidioplasty, and phalloplasty.
Identifying as transgender can be stressful for the individual, their family, friends and those who they work closely with. Finding a way through the minefield of how to manage a transition and keep emotionally strong is made much easier through the support of groups with people not just at the same stage as you, but also those who have lived the experience for several years and can offer words of support, advice, encouragement and hope.
Whilst MTF transition is more frequently reported in the media, there are some famous names in the FTM transgender world. Whilst earliest records of transgender living goes back centuries, with unverifiable records of a transgender count in the court of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1560s, there are big names in the field of music, acting, science and more including the son of Sonny and Cher and Thomas Beattie, the “pregnant father” followed closely by the media in 2007, who is now a father of four. There is also a name to celebrate in the FTM field, which is that of Michael Dillon, the first transgender man to undergo a phalloplasty.
Some people transition after marriage, whether that be same-sex marriage or heterosexual marriage. Depending on your location, it is possible to maintain the marriage, if you both wish to stay together, whilst you obtain gender reorientation certification so that you can be legally known under your new name. Within the UK, it is only Northern Ireland which does not recognise same-sex marriage, where gaining new legal status as your identifying gender may be more difficult if you are already married.
Fortunately, the world is changing for the better in many ways when it comes to the legality of marriage as a trans person. Nepal already allows the registration of gender as male, female or other and in 2017 a trans woman registered as “O” married her male partner. Argentina recognised same-sex marriage on 1 January 2019 and Costa Rica is to follow in May 2019 and Taiwan in May 2020. Same-sex marriages may be allowed but Valentine’s Day can be tricky. Celebrating your relationship with your partner or partners can mean feeling out of place because of the stereotypes. Yet there is a proggress and the people nowadays are more and more suportive. After all we all are human beings and deserve to have a great Valentine's day. So we got you covered with these ideas for valentines day.
The future is looking bright in respect to trans marriage. Armenia and Israel already recognise the validity of same-sex marriages that have taken place in other countries and same-sex marriage is currently under consideration by the governments or the courts in Chile, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, several states in Mexico, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Switzerland and Venezuela, with recognition of foreign marriages under consideration in Paraguay and civil unions under consideration in Monaco, Poland, Romania, and Thailand. Legal cases have been filed in a number of other countries.
Transitioning is not a linear, path that sees rapid progress from one binary gender to the other.
Transgender people have a long history of being denied the right to marry and having their partnerships and marriages disrespected.
For many starting the transition journey, after potentially years of being made to feel ugly and unworthy of love, a major concern is wondering if finding love is ever going to be possible.
Current FTM celebrities are those who are not just good at their jobs, but also raise awareness and advocate for social justice and acceptance for transgender people.
